Breaking Ground in Snohomish: A Homeowner’s Guide to Private Wells & Groundwater

Snohomish County is a landscape of contrasts. Within a single drive, you can move from the bustling urban centers of Everett to the quiet, rugged timberlands of the Cascade foothills. For those looking to build on the county's beautiful rural acreage, a private water well isn't just a utility—it’s your lifeline to the land.

At Access Well Drilling, we specialize in bridging the gap between Snohomish's strict regulatory requirements and its complex geology. Based in Sedro-Woolley, we’ve spent years helping neighbors across the county line secure clean, reliable water.

Top 10 Communities We Serve in Snohomish County

Whether you’re in a river valley or up on a ridge, we provide expert drilling and pump services to:

  1. Arlington – Navigating the rich gravels and sands of the Stillaguamish basin.

  2. Stanwood – Managing coastal water quality near the Skagit-Snohomish line.

  3. Marysville – Serving the growing rural-residential outskirts.

  4. Snohomish – Working through the heavy glacial till common in the historic valley.

  5. Monroe – Addressing the deeper aquifers of the Skykomish River corridor.

  6. Granite Falls – Specialized drilling for the rocky, high-elevation terrain of the "Mountain Loop."

  7. Lake Stevens – Providing high-capacity wells for luxury residential estates.

  8. Everett (Unincorporated) – Supporting rural pockets just outside city limits.

  9. Darrington – Deep-valley drilling in the shadow of Whitehorse Mountain.

  10. Sultan & Gold Bar – Experts in the high-flow requirements of the Skykomish valley.

The Snohomish Difference: Delegated Authority

One thing that sets Snohomish apart is that the Snohomish County Health Department (SHD) has been delegated authority by the State Department of Ecology to inspect well seals personally.

  • The 48-Hour Rule: As your driller, we must notify the SHD at least 48 hours before we seal or decommission a well. This extra layer of oversight ensures your aquifer is protected from surface contamination.

  • The Individual Site Inspection: Unlike some counties, Snohomish requires an Individual Water Supply Site Inspection. This ensures your well is at least 100 feet from any drainfield and 50 feet from septic tanks before we ever move the rig onto your property.

Geology: Valley Gravels vs. Glacial Till

In the Snohomish and Stillaguamish valleys, we often find water in "unconfined" aquifers—basically giant underground sponges of sand and gravel. These wells are often highly productive but require careful screen placement to keep fine sand out of your faucets.

In the uplands (like Granite Falls or Monroe), we frequently encounter Glacial Till—a dense, concrete-like mixture left by the glaciers. Drilling through this "hardpan" requires heavy-duty equipment (DOE License #1825) to reach the cleaner, more protected aquifers beneath.

Case Study: The "Beneficial Use" Balance

  • The Resource: The Snohomish Groundwater Management Plan

  • The Story: Snohomish County was one of the first in the state to develop a comprehensive groundwater program. This was born out of a need to protect the quality of the "lowland" aquifers from leaking nitrates and industrial runoff.

  • The Outcome: Because of these studies, we now have a much clearer map of where water is "legally available." In the Snohomish Watershed (WRIA 7), new permit-exempt wells are often limited to an average of 950 gallons per day, ensuring there is enough water for both families and the salmon in our rivers.
